In the life of many Christians today, there is a prolong battle. This battle is not physical nor the type you face with gun or sword. It is purely spiritual conflict. The battle field is the human mind and not land, sea or air. Also, the flesh and the spirit are the two warring parties while the mind constitutes a fertile ground for this great battle. Each time the flesh prevails against the spirit, the Christian will be down casted, depressed and agile to adore worldly things at the expense of Godly things. Sin, rejection and death are the consequences of living in the flesh.
God expects His children to subdue the flesh and live in the Spirit. Jesus told us in John 6:63 that “It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing….” Also, life in the spirit is very necessary because of the following.
- God Himself is a Spirit. And if we must connect with Him, we must live in the Spirit. It takes a spiritual man to fellowship with God. John 4:24 says ‘God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.’
- The world is a battle field. We fight spiritual battles, the kind of battle we cannot see with ordinary eye. Demons don’t appear on x-ray, and the scan cannot see them. We must be spiritual to constantly have victory over him that is in the world. Ephesians 6:12 says “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
- Living in the Spirit establishes us. It gives us the strength to run the Christian race swiftly and to the end. “For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established.” Romans 1:11.
How to continuously live in the Spirit
- Surrender all to God. The bible says “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.” Romans 12:1.
- Show passion or burning desire to the things of God. Romans 12: 11 “Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord.”
- Always offer sacrifices of praise unto God. Singing spiritual songs and hymns make us to dwell in God’s presence continuously. Psalms 22:3, Hebrews 13:15.
- Study and meditate on the word of God, the word is spirit. “…..the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” John 6:63.
- Pray without ceasing. Don’t let your spiritual battery run down, recharge it with fasting and prayer.
- Lastly, say no to the flesh but exhibit the fruits of the spirit as stated in the book of Galatians 5:22-26.
