Nineteen ninety six was the year;
The day, Tuesday, first of October.
When Nigeria was a year older.
Then the black-goggled ruler
In his self-succeeding plan
Caused some people to laugh.
He made a national broadcast,
Saying, ‘Ekiti and five others
Now have the power
To have their own maps
And to have their own capitals,’
Ekiti State was declared.
Ekiti people were thrilled
Because their State is real.
They all trooped to the streets,
Singing that they are free.
And all the trees
Went and stood on the hills.
They clapped their leaves
And brought down the breeze
To cool the Ekitis,
The people were relieved.
Ekiti must be a State
That keeps clean, her slate.
There you see the fountains
That always breed the brains.
The wise always seeks for wisdom
And use her to build his kingdom.
But unto you the Wisdom is calling
And to her voice you better listen:
“I can see you as the people
That will say no to trouble.
So when you aspire to do good
And you see your friend doing good
Count him not as your rival
But choose him as your partner;
Learn to be your brothers’ keeper
And never parade yourself as a killer.
When your sun starts to set
The pestle and the mortar start to fight.
And when your moon starts shining,
The pounded yam is laughing.
It laughs only to the strong
But to the lazy, it frowns.
All the goodies in the soup
Must follow the morsel to the bowel.
The bowel is filled with the food
That is naturally rich and good.
The good food causeth a sound sleep
And the sound sleep causeth a sound mind;
The sound mind maketh a sound body
And the sound body maketh a good man.
The good man must make a good plan
And the good plan will make a good place.
The good place will be Ekiti State.
You have been blessed with the land
That is highly rich in minerals:
The feldspar and the granite,
The tatium and the syenite,
The tantalite and the chromite,
The columbite and the quartzite,
The bauxite clay and the cassterite,
The ceramic clay and the tin ore,
The kaolin and the aluminion ore.
All these are God-given resources
That chose you as their source.
What of the cash crops and the livestock?
That settled down in the land of honour:
There are cocoa, oil palm and timber,
And there are citrus, kola nut and rubber.
Plantain and the tubers also prosper
And there are poultry, sheep pen and the piggery,
Just few of the crops and the livestock
That never cease to flourish and rejoice
In the land they have found favour.
There are some wonders of nature
That God had put in posture:
The deep valleys and the high peaks,
The mountain chains and the steep hills,
The conical rocks and the draped ridges,
The plateaus and the caves,
The dams and the streams,
The warm spring and the water falls,
The artesian well and the roaring rivers.
They all chose you as their home.
The wildlife also has their fame,
The beasts have nobody to blame
And the forests no longer think of flame.
They all sing the glory of their home.
Blessed are the memories of your past heroes
Whose hands had started the freedom fight,
They fought Ekiti parapo war in Eighteen eighty six
And since then they had sowed the seed of unity
That created you in Nineteen ninety six.
Some willingly laid down their lives
So as to bring peace to the nation.
And some read to the highest level
So as to bring light to the nation.
This paved the way for the great slogan-
“The fountain of knowledge” is flowing in Ekiti.
Great are the living heroes of Ekiti,
You sons and daughters, at home and abroad.
Like your pestles and your mortars
You need not to fight yourselves
But always lean to give peace a chance
And be thankful to God, your maker.
Because He has given you the land
That is flowing with milk and honey.
Now you must find two to your three
And make a better place for yourself
You have to join your hands together
And move forward your great state
You have to tap from the fountain of knowledge
And lift up your great Nation
Long live Ekiti State!
Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!”
